Despite the corona pandemic, Mexico keeps its door wide open to tourists from all over the world. They are allowed to enter the country without testing or quarantine.

Everything for the economy. But the population pays a high price. And the path taken by the Mexican government is also not without danger to the rest of the world.

When Amazon founder and billionaire Jeff Bezos came to Mexico on vacation with his girlfriend Lauren Sánchez in February, the prominent couple’s paparazzi photos were invaluable – as the snapshots suggest that tourism in Mexico is safe and regular.

The left-wing populist government relies on international tourism to save the tourism industry – so crucial to the Mexican economy – from collapse.

“People don’t travel when they are sick,” said Hugo López-Gatell Ramírez of the Health Ministry, defending the controversial strategy of open borders for tourists.
