Employees of the Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny fear that he has been transferred to another, even stricter penal camp.

Navalny is no longer in prison, where he has been incarcerated for a year, they say. It is not clear at the moment where he is.

Navalny spent more than a year in the IK-2 penal camp, about 100 kilometres from the Russian capital Moscow. But he wasn’t there this morning, his lawyer who came to visit him determined. It is not clear at the moment to which penal camp Navalny would have been transferred.

Navalny was arrested when he returned from Germany in January 2021, where he was being treated for nerve poisoning. He has since been jailed for several crimes. The opponent had barely set foot on Russian soil when he was already sentenced to an effective prison sentence of 2.5 years for allegedly violating the conditions of a previous release.

Last month, he was jailed for 9 years for fraud and contempt of court. According to the court, he has unlawfully used millions of dollars donated to political organizations for private purposes. He also allegedly insulted a judge during a previous hearing.
