Russia Calls Bellingcat Research Collective A Foreign Agent

Read Time:42 Second

The Russian Ministry of Justice has designated the critical investigative collective Bellingcat as a foreign agent. Nine journalists, one of whom works for BBC Russia, have also been awarded the label.

“Russia considers Bellingcat such a threat that we have been declared a foreign agent,” Bellingcat founder Eliot Higgins wrote on Twitter.

His journalistic collective has published pieces in which Russia is associated, among other things, with the downing of flight MH17 and the poisonings of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny and former Russian spy Sergei Skripal.

Organizations that are designated as foreign agents in Russia are under increased scrutiny by the authorities and must state in their publications that they have that label.

The name is used for what the authorities believe to be organizations financed by foreign countries and engaged in political activities against the Russian rulers.
