President Macron Promises New Leadership Style

Emmanuel Macron promises a new leadership style should he run for a second term as president of France. The 44-year-old head of state has a comfortable lead in the polls.

Macron’s campaign motto, “With you”, means “a long-term method” of keeping in touch with the population and making the country more self-sufficient. During a lengthy press conference in Aubervilliers near Paris, Macron indicated investing heavily in defence, emphasizing his commitment to French interests in the European Union. In addition, he promised to guide the country through the “era of crisis”, referring to the “tragedy” in Ukraine and global warming.

He also promised an annual tax cut of 15 billion euros and confirmed that the retirement age in France would be gradually raised to 65 years. In addition, Macron announced his political program to move forward with labour market reform. The politician pointed to economic growth and the fall in unemployment in recent years.

Macron only announced his official candidacy a week and a half ago, while the first round of the presidential elections is already on April 10. He’s barely campaigned so far, but given his lead over main rival Marine Le Pen, that doesn’t seem necessary either. He has already announced that he will not participate in debates with other candidates.

Macron is sometimes accused of ruling from an ivory tower with bombastic speeches. The long press conference is seen as an attempt to be more accessible. He has kept journalists at bay for the past five years.

While Macron’s (failed) attempts to stop Russian President Vladimir Putin from invading Ukraine sparked disdain from opponents, his handling of the crisis and the coronavirus pandemic has created a sense of national unity that Macron benefits from. According to observers, the protest of the yellow vest movement has ebbed away in recent years, partly due to his actions. “We need to tackle inequality at its roots,” Macron said.

If no candidate receives an absolute majority of the votes during the first round of April 10, a new round will follow two weeks later between the two most popular participants. If Macron wins, he will need a victory from his La Republique en Marche party in June’s parliamentary elections to carry out his program vigorously.
