A heavy forest fire is raging in the mountains of the Spanish holiday island of Gran Canaria.
In the severely hit Tejeda, Artenara and Galdar, dozens of people had to be brought to safety, the emergency services of the Canary Islands reported on Twitter on Sunday.
The fire brigade is fighting the fire with planes and helicopters. Rescue workers estimate that the affected area is around 1,000 hectares, said Angel Victor Torres, the president of the Canary Islands.
The fire broke out on Saturday near Artenara and spread from there. It is still not under control, Torres said.
The newspaper La Vanguardia said that according to the authorities it is possible that a 55-year-old man ignited the fire while welding. The Civil Guard interrogated him.
