If U.S. President Donald Trump continues his intended sanctions against the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, Germany will retaliate.
If Trump does not withdraw his threat, Germany wants to change the U.S. President’s mind through “coordinated action by the European Union”.
It is not known what these countermeasures would involve.
Trump signed legislation last year that would allow the U.S. to impose severe economic sanctions on companies involved in the construction.
Washington is against the pipeline that allows gas to be transported from Russia to Europe because it would give Russia more influence in Western Europe. It is the first time that the U.S. has threatened to sanction such a project.
According to Russia, U.S. sanctions are unfair and go against international law. Nord Stream 2 runs from Russia to Germany via the Baltic Sea. The project was already delayed due to the sanctions.
The project is expected to be completed in the second half of this year. The Kremlin promised last month that despite the threat of U.S. sanctions, construction would continue and be ready.
