The British coronavirus variant is on the rise in Germany. Health Minister Jens Spahn said the mutated version of the virus accounts for 22 percent of identified infections in his country.
About two weeks ago it was about 6 percent, German media reports.
In Germany and other countries, the spread of new variants is followed with concern. The British variant B117 is seen as extra contagious. Germany this week extended the entry ban from countries where there are many infections with corona mutations.
The measure now applies until 3 March.
The British variant has now started mutating again, the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) stated on Tuesday.
The mutation may make existing corona vaccines less effective against the virus. The defences of people who have been healed may also work less well against the new version.
