An estimated 500,000 cubic meters of the glacier on the Italian side of Mont Blanc is in danger of breaking down due to the heat.

The authorities in the Italian mountain province of Aosta have therefore ordered about seventy people, including fifty tourists, in thirty houses, to leave immediately.

The piece of ice that is likely to break down is part of the Planp Provincux Glacier, nearly 9 kilometres east of the summit of Mont Blanc.

Access roads to the valley concerned are closed.
