Daughter Daria of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny has received the Sakharov Prize on behalf of her imprisoned father in the European Parliament in Strasbourg.

“Say that no one can identify Russia with Putin’s regime,” Navalny had sent her as a message, she said in her acceptance speech for the human rights award.

Navalny, 45, was awarded the prize for his “immense courage” in fighting the corruption of the Putin regime, exposing abuses and mobilizing millions of Russians. “He has been threatened, tortured, poisoned, arrested, detained, but they have not been able to silence him,” said parliament speaker David Sassoli.

According to student and blogger Daria (20), people who see a solution in spawning dictators are on the wrong track. The EU must also remain true to its ideals, “true to those great ideas that are at its foundation. We are committed to a Europe of ideas, to celebrating human rights, democracy and integrity,” said Navalny through his eldest.

Navalny has been serving a prison sentence since he returned from Germany early this year. There he had undergone treatment after being poisoned in his home country. Also present at the ceremony in Strasbourg was Leonid Volkov, one of Navalny’s political advisers and campaign manager during the 2018 elections.

Named after Soviet dissident and Nobel laureate Andrei Sakharov, the Human Rights Prize has been awarded since 1988. The winner will receive 50,000 euros.
