British Politician Runs Away From 11-Year-Old Climate Activist

Climate Summit in Glasgow May be Extended: Such an Agreement Always Needs Some Drama

Read Time:1 Minute, 47 Second

The climate summit in Glasgow will officially come to an end at 6 p.m. Friday afternoon. But the negotiations will have to continue next weekend anyway, thinks journalist Marc Peeperkorn. “The differences are too great, and poorer countries want more money.”

“At least it’s not all doom and gloom. It has been toned down somewhat in terms of CO2 emissions in particular. It now states that coal-fired power stations that capture CO2 are still allowed, and only inefficient subsidies for the fossil industry will be scrapped. That is a clear weakening, but financing for poorer countries has actually been tightened.”

“New. These are minor adjustments, and it’s a bad sign that so little has changed. This means we will not be able to achieve the final chord of six o’clock this afternoon. Unless some miracle happens, the heavens open up here, and all the CO2 flows out. But it’s a grey rainy day, so I don’t see that happening.

“No joke: this means an extension; the differences are too great. The poor countries are pushing for more money, that 100 billion euros per year should be ready next year. Only then will they move towards more ambitious CO2 targets.”

“If the chairman says they will continue, they will continue. Such an agreement needs some kind of drama. If it had already been closed this afternoon, all kinds of climate clubs would have said that it had gone too easy, that more could be achieved. You have to radiate a little that it has been dragged away from the gates of hell. But if it continues until Sunday, the atmosphere can change, with a lot of irritation. Then countries can say: then not.

“China is playing a beautiful double game. That is inciting poorer countries to demand more money, while China is not paying for it. And if it blows, China will have to meet fewer requirements. The West, the US and the EU want to agree that more countries cough up 100 billion a year. Read: also China. And China could invest a little more in green projects, in the view of the West.”
