Brits Fear A Third Wave of Corona Infections Due to the Advance of Indian Variant

British experts warn the population that the third wave of infections is coming. The cause would be the Indian variant. As a result, the announced relaxations could still be postponed in June.

There has been positive news in the United Kingdom in recent weeks. The number of infections fell sharply and the country was one of the world leaders in vaccinations. About 80 percent of adult Britons have already had at least one shot with a corona vaccine. That’s a lot, but experts warn that one dose may not provide enough protection against the Indian variety. In the meantime, the measures have been relaxed and bars and restaurants – provided the safety measures are followed – are open again.

Still, virologists warn that a third wave may be on the way. This would essentially result from the rise of the Indian variant of the virus, which is much more contagious. According to Health Minister Matt Hancock, between half and three-quarters of all new infections would now be related to that Indian variant.

The British government wants to relax the corona measures almost entirely on June 21, but doubts are now growing about this, at least among the experts. The government does not want to say whether that date will be compromised for the time being.

In the meantime, the opposition in Great Britain accuses the government of banning passenger traffic to and from India far too late. That only happened on April 23, when the news about the Indian variant had been circulating for some time. In comparison, on April 9, the government had banned travel to and from Pakistan and Bangladesh, while the number of infections there was much lower than in India.

In the four weeks, before the travel ban was announced, around 6,560 people travelled to Britain from India. Whether it has anything to do with it or not is not clear, but London and New Delhi are currently negotiating a trade deal. For the UK, which left the European Union at the beginning of this year, reaching agreements with such large countries is very important.
