Belarus, in turn, has declared sanctions against the United States. Among other things, the country will reduce the number of American diplomatic personnel on its territory.

Belarus is taking these retaliatory measures after the new US sanctions against Minsk came into effect.

Belarus’s retaliatory measures include the “reduction of diplomatic, administrative and technical staff” at the US embassy in Minsk and the “tightening of the visa issuance procedure” for Belarus. This was stated in a statement from Minsk.

Belarus has also withdrawn permission for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to operate in the territory, the country said.

“We cannot let this unfriendly step pass unnoticed,” said Anatoly Glaz, the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman. Glaz said that after US economic sanctions against nine Belarusian state-owned companies came into effect.

Last week, Washington announced it was working with the European Union on additional sanctions against Belarus after Minsk diverted a passenger plane bound for Vilnius and arrested political opponent Roman Protasevich on board.
