Austria will introduce new corona measures on Saturday. Media in the country are reporting that quarantine rules are being relaxed, and people are being forced to wear masks when they are unable to keep their distance from others.
People do not need to quarantine for as long after contact with an infected person. After five days, it can be ended with a negative corona test. In addition, it has been decided that the vaccination certificates will be valid for six months from now on and that there will be more checks on the 2G policy in shops.
“We must do everything we can to prevent another lockdown,” Chancellor Karl Nehammer said at a press conference after a corona meeting with regional leaders and experts. A lockdown has been in place for unvaccinated Austrians since mid-November. The rest of the country was in lockdown for several weeks in November and December.
Austria reported nearly 8,300 new infections on Thursday, almost tripling the daily average of last week. The increase is due to the omikron variant of the coronavirus. The validity of the vaccination certificate is shortened to motivate people to a booster vaccination, which should help against omikron.
